Masterpiece: Be My Baby
Stephanie Zachareks article on the song on the Salon website

When Im laying out cold, six feet down in a trench in the pissing rain, my coffin covered in soil, the song I want playing, so loud that it echoes across the vale of York, is Be My Baby by The Ronettes. Its Phil Spectors finest moment, featuring his wife Ronnie, who suffered years of torment at his hands. She loved him from the bottom of her heart, yet his love for her was obsessive, and painful resulting in Ronnie being locked in her wardrobe for at least 3 hours a day. So wont you say you love me, Ill make you so proud of me, her voice carries longing, desperation, and hurt, yet the song is a pure pop moment.

Its a track that sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it. My little silver 7inch copy has been played hundreds of times, yet it still holds the same power, and gets better every time I hear it. Sometimes I cry to it, I think of Ronnie and what she went through with Phil, the petty tyrant in his glued on toupee, desperately suffocating his beautiful young wife from the streets of the Bronx.

Oh, since the day I saw you
I have been waiting for you.
You know I will adore you 'til eternity.

Be My Baby sounds as fresh now as it did in 1963, its my song, Im proud to claim it; its the best thing Ive ever heard. Its been with me forever; a pure sparkling piece of pop heaven.
