WRITERS AGAINST WRITING

Website created by a small group of writers from Edinburgh with the ethos of Pro expression. Non judgment. Free speech. No sell out. The group is against writing for profit; against writing that embraces compromise; against writing for the market; against writing that has been sold, will be sold, is designed to be sold; against writing that has been artistically emasculated, therefore everything contained on the site is a true representation of their artistic endeavour. The only artifice employed is honesty. One of the group's founders is Brian Cuninghame, whose showcased poetry on this website can be read here.
APOGEE MAG

apogeemag.com was created in response to the fact that there are amazing people in the world who are doing incredible things that we may NEVER hear about. The goal of the webzine is to change that. The contents of apogeemag.com are also comprised of reviews, comics and writing.
The Unheard Words mission is simply to encourage a vibrant online writing group. And, to provide the opportunity for the words of new writers to be heard. It's about the new writer, the interested reader and hitherto unheard words.

LONDON BOOKS

Independent publisher which aims to bring old and new fiction together in a tradition that is original in its subject matter, style and social concerns. They believe that the marginalised fiction of the past can be as relevant and exciting today as when it was first published, and their classic reprints will reflect the language and politics of tougher eras, while their new fiction will focus on emerging writers with something to say and a novel way of getting their messages across. While their foundation is the real London of everyday men and women, there are no boundaries, no limitations to what they will publish. They will also be releasing non-fiction titles that take their fancy. Founded by two authors, London Books are unusual in that they are doing this for love rather than money, and therefore remain beyond the profit motive. This means they are free to print what they want, when they want.

Two Ravens operate with no geographical boundaries: they publish authors from around the UK and overseas. BOOKCROSSING.COM

BookCrossing is a global book club that crosses time and space. The concept is basically, when someone reads a book they enjoy, they click into the BookCrossing website and register their comments, then print off a sticker, attach it to the book and leave it in a public place. Then, the book will hopefully be picked up by someone else, read, and they will register their comments etc etc. Sounds weird but it seems to work as the many reviews and fascinating details of where the books were found or left seem to suggest. I've personally been left lying around Italy twice and once in Birmingham city centre, which I have to say, excites me greatly. It's also a fascinating exercise in fate, karma, or whatever you want to call the chain of events that can occur between two or more lives and one piece of literature. The ultimate aim of a writer is to be read. This is a lovely idea to help that process along

WORKING PRESS:

wORking Press is an agency that encourages working class people, especially from marginalised groups, to realise their work in book format. Their area of publication is roughly that suggested by 'books by and about working class artists'. This activity in itself tends to validate artists and foster self-confidence even when it does not result in a publication. In spite of a shoe string budgets they have, since 1987, managed to publish over twenty books, ranging from pamphlets, through comics to full scale books in editions of between 300 to 2000, all without public funding. More details plus lots of great links to resources for working class writers, click image.
