SELECTED
POETRY
by Michael Paul Ladanyi

'TO BLOW NUMB'

there is hoodoo-tongue violence
in your hope-taunt eyes, jacob.
you will come back home again,
machine-red-twisted, a portioned
thing hung hum-splintered upon itself,
like orange water-drug fingers.

i thought i saw you tuesday,
in hunch-white limbs, acorn-moss
soil beside a winter-oak sidewalk,
like sun/knife/insane/turning.

there is a twig-stone place out back
where tenor crows lung-crunch
gray january mornings, where acoustic
wind refuses to blow numb,
like edified smiles through cigarette smoke.

below lies your box of hero-torn eyes,
your 52 reasons to hang yourself and live.
i have walked there, jacob,
where serpentine kudzu was burned,
nude and diseased.

'SHIVER FILM'

I thought to call Patricia this
morning and talk about shiver-film
street children of Bangladesh,
instead I watched blue pillow-reversed
smoke rise burning from a cigarette,

/listened to my heart grow sick/
/become traffic-paint rain against a tin roof/
/thoughts about heavily perfumed whores/

Way down, trickling as ocean-scratched
chatter washed sharp, green-piano-
key-words are brothers buried
beneath profitable black,
sun-coughing metal godfucking,
everything that is like sand
on cleaved neck-tongues.

War is a glass bottled ship/
is naked insanity/
is silver suns fisheye-hooked;
most of the children will
stop shivering when they die.

'PLASTER RELIEF'

~A Letter to Shannon in November~

Words are spider-prayer lullabies,
orange and cream tongues written
on the bed-sheet face of what we
have done to ourselves,
methadone rainbows eclipsing my spine,
bold aging thoughts that smell
like chocolate and pain,
pouring brown gravy, soup spooning.

Shannon, my stomach is hungry
stick figures, I am living in
despairing ghost-tap windows,
walking the green-brown hall
as a match-struck thing in plaster relief.
If I have ever heard laughter
like yours, it is now.

Ill bathe eye-weight circles in shadow,
steal art to hang on my face,
phone you through a forgotten
stereo-tone number,
and listen to click-paper whispers
you call words, telling me
I cant do this forever.

'SOUP-TONE WALLS'

Sophia came back from her shotgun
mouth grave yesterday.
I put down my blue book
of Creeley and made coffee.
While scratch-picking black dirt
from beneath red nails she said,
Everyone wants to write a novel.

I said, I could give a fuck less
about what everyone wants to do.
She stared at green soup-tone walls,
down the short spider-brown-carpet hall,
as if listening for rattle-tap
chicken bone whispers poured
into eye-bone wounds.

I need to get back, she said,
while lighting a cigarette like
pill-bottle rattling. I thought,
you dont have to use the door
if you dont want to.
She turned,
smiled like broom straw through blood.
