Mark Cunningham lives in Virginia in the United States. Poems are in recent or forthcoming issues of Practice, BlazeVox, Parcel, and Pequin (all internet). Otoliths will be bringing out a book titled 80 Beetles, which will be available soon through Lulu.com. Tarpaulin Sky Press will be bringing out a book titled Body Language, which will contain two separate collections, one titled Body (on parts of the body) and one title Primer (on numbers and letters). The poems here are closer in style to the beetle poems, but both books are thrill-a-minute, edge-of-your-seat collections.

 The more static the chart, the more undiluted the motion it represents. We finally contacted the aliens, but our methods of communication acted as white noise on each other's nervous systems, and both groups fell asleep.

 The circle of life: a run-over squirrel, then around the corner a run-over raven. The world is everything that's just in case. One hundred degrees, stark sun, and still one moth left over to bump against the TV at night. You can never watch the same movie of a river twice.

 Something so specific that it can be thought of as nothing but itself is often considered abstract. They treated me nice, like I was some sort of person. This is a test, which means it is not real. But you're in big trouble if you fail.

BLACK AND WHITE CLICK BEETLE


 An observation is not gradual: the subconscious mind cannot understand this statement right away. The most nightmarish part was waiting for it to be over, but I didn't realize it was a nightmare until it was over.

BLUE MILKWEED BEETLE


 He "superimposes on the art of words the art of following his own phantoms" but then we realized we couldn't see the words, either, or they lay there breathless until we spoke. The light traveled 25,500 light years to land on my eyelids in the 300 milliseconds that I blinked.
