THOMAS DICKSON

Born: 3 January 1950 at the Eastern General Hospital in Edinburgh. I was brought up in Niddrie and left school at 15 to become a butcher. I’ve been working for the same butcher ever since

Q: When/why did you first start drinking in the Tynecastle Arms?

A: About 18 years ago when I moved to Gorgie with my wife, Maureen. She sent me out for a couple of pints with a fiver

Why do you keep going in?:

A: I work here part time. All the money I earn here goes towards our holidays abroad, so I never see it. We like to go somewhere different every year because it’s nice to have a wee change. If we really like somewhere, we’ll go back though

Q: What is your favourite song?

A: I love the Beatles and The Kinks. I think I’m a frustrated mod. I got my first scooter about a year ago. I used to cycle everywhere but I’m getting a bit old for that now. It’s a Megalo 125 and it’s my pride and joy

Q: What is your favourite film?

A: The African Queen’ when he gets in the water with all the leeches. It’s a great film. I love it

Q: What is your favourite tipple?

A: Dark rum and coke or pints of lager. It changes now and again

Q: What place in Edinburgh do you think every visitor to the city should see?

A: They should go up Rose Street or try some of the clubs. The BMC is an excellent club at night-time. Edinburgh’s a beautiful city

Q: What don't you like about Edinburgh?

A: The people in charge spend our money on a load of shit. Read in the paper last week that they’re paying money to put extra bumps in the street, as they have to use money up before the end of the financial year. That money should be going to the schools

TAM'S TOP 6 MOMENTS

1. Getting married to my wife, Maureen

2. Seeing Hearts winning two Scottish Cups. I was only 6 when they won the first time. It was just after they did away with the trams, and the tramlines were still down. I stood at Haymarket with my mum, waving my scarf. My dad was at the match

3. Going on holiday to Magaluf. It’s a very friendly place and the pub we went in all the time, we made some great pals. We’ve been there 3 times now, the last time 2 years ago

4. Getting my first house and settling down. It was a tip when we first moved in but we worked on it and made it home. We had to move lots of stuff and make the bedroom into a kitchen. That was 18 years ago

5. When I got my scooter. I’ve always wanted one. My first journey on it was from Gorgie, down to my mother’s in Newcraighall. I took it very carefully

6. Winning the dominoes league last night. We were playing Dickens pub. There’s going to be a big party next week in here. It’s a great feeling if you’re the captain of a team that wins something. I was over the moon. This was a particularly hard league so I was extra pleased. And if anyone’s interested, we’re looking for 4 sponsors for the pub’s crib and dominoes teams, to help arrange race nights etc
