SARAH KNIGHT

Born: 9 September 1921 in West Richmond Street, Edinburgh. Due to childhood bad eyesight, I was sent to the Myopia School at 43 Lauriston Place from the age of 8. I remember being in the playground in about 1930 and seeing the R101 airship going overhead on its way to the Meadows

Q: When/why did you first start drinking in the Tynecastle Arms?

A: About 1972. I used to go into the Jug Bar (Jug bar's were a feature of many old Edinburgh pubs. They provide an intimate space, with seating and timber/glass screens on either side, dividing them from the rest of the bar. The Diggers (see left) still has a Jug bar) I wouldn't have come in a pub by myself in these days, otherwise

Q: Why do you keep going in?:

A: Having lived in Gorgie for 53 years, I know a lot of the locals and enjoy the company. Also, it's handy for the bingo and I cannae walk any further

Q: What is your favourite song?

A: Bing Crosby singing, 'White Christmas' is just lovely. Also like Louis Armstrong's 'What a Wonderful World,' and Doris Day singing 'Que Sera Sera'

Q: What is your favourite film?

A: I cannae mind the name of it. It's an old one with Marlene Dietrich in it. She got shot at the end. I've seen it on the telly a few times. She has two lovers in it and she gets shot at the end, saving one of them. Also, 'Tugboat Annie' with Marie Dressler and who else? Was it Wallace Beery? And another young lass

Q: What place in Edinburgh do you think every visitor to the city should see?

A: The Royal Museum in Chambers Street. Used to go in there when I was a girl. They used to have the inside of a whale hanging from the ceiling. Don't know if it's still there though. Sarah's first date with her future husband, Tommy, was at the New Victoria Picture House, in Clerk Street (now the Odeon.) She says she cannae remember what they went to see, but remembers the cinema had an organ and a band at the time, and if you wanted to get in for a shilling, you had to enter by Buccleugh Street. She can also mind the kiss she gave Tommy when they said goodnight. It seemed to last a long time. Sarah met Tommy when she was working for Usher's Brewery. They were introduced by her friend, Jean, who Sarah sent over to ask if he was married. Jean's auntie was one of the last fishwives in Edinburgh, and used to sell mussels and buckies outside the Tynecastle Arms

Q: What don't you like about Edinburgh?

A: Gorgie's filthy. They're not sweeping it enough and there's a drain in my street been leaking water for months - it's dangerous

MISSING - Presumed Drunk

Interviewees may nominate up to 2 old friends they would like to get in touch with again

Sarah nominated:

Maimie Howie - She used to sing up the Locarno and married a Pilot Instructor Officer called Croft. I'd like to get in touch with her, or find out what happened to her. She'd be about 75 now. She was a trouper before she got married and was brought up in St Leonard' Hill
