NIALL SANDILANDS
Niall is the Estate Manager at Gorgie City Farm,(Winner of 1995 'Most Child Friendly Place to Visit' Award Highly Commended in 1998)
Born: 1 May 1962 at 13 Madeira Place, Leith
Q: When/why did you first start drinking in the Tynecastle Arms? A: I started drinking there the day I started working at Gorgie City Farm , which was also the day that Jim Jeffries was announced as the new manager of Hearts. I remember there being lots of photographers around that day Why do you keep going in?: A: Between Haymarket and Chesser its the best bar in the Gorgie/Dalry area Q: What is your favourite song/band? A: Impossible to pick one but love Teenage Fan Club, the Go-Betweens(17 albums down the line and they're still the most under-rated pop band ever) and Orange Juice, basically everything brought out by Postcard/ Rough Trade/Fast Records. Also really like the Trash Can Sinatras. When I was younger I used to love Dexy's Midnight Runners when they were going through their 'Searching for the Young Soul Rebels' phase. All that woolly hat and coalman's jacket stuff. Definitely something good. I had everything they'd ever brought out, prior to my flat getting done over a few years ago. It was the last game of the season. I was working in the pub and Hearts were playing Dunfermline to decide who would get relegated. Hearts won, so I had a couple of drinks after work, then went home. My hifi, TV, cameras and 500 cd collection was gone. How much does that hurt the spirit? Luckily the vinyl was too heavy for them. They'd emptied my black rubbish bags out in the stair and used them to put my stuff in. The song that sums life up for me is probably 'A Man's a Man.'
Q: What place in Edinburgh do you think every visitor to the city should see? A: The Old Calton Cemetery, to me, sums up the cosmopolitan nature of Edinburgh when you think about who's buried there - David Hume, many foreign poets, the American Civil War Memorial. I also love the New Town for its architectural splendour and Stockbridge for being Stockbridge Q: What don't you like about Edinburgh? A: It's citizens, the rubbish and the council, or the rubbish council if you'd prefer
