Erick Sharp

Born: 12 September 1948 at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. My earliest memories are of living in the prefabs in Saughtonmains when I was young. I lived there until we were forced out so they could knock them down. Round about that time I started my first job, at Burton's Biscuit Factory, and got a new flat in Hutchison. Then I got involved in the tailoring trade, starting off as a trainee cutter for Man Clarks then ended up as a tailor at Redford Barracks. I currently have my own tailoring business, specialising in military and civilian clothing. If you need any work done and want a competitive price, contact me at eckshp@bushinternet.com

Q: When/why did you first start drinking in the Tynecastle Arms?

A: When I first moved to Gorgie, 18 years ago, I came in one day and stood with a pound note in my hand waiting to get served. It took them 10 minutes to get to me, so I walked out and went for a pint across the road at what used to be The Green Tree. Then that went duff so I came back in here

Q: Why do you keep going in?:

A: It grew on me bit by bit by bit by bit. Even when you get bammies in, it still grows on you

Q: What is your favourite tipple?

A: 70/=, or white wine and now and again a nice wee malt whisky, but as I said, only every now and again

Q: What is your favourite music?

A: I love the Beatles. If I had to pick a favourite of their songs, it'd probably be 'Let it Be'. I'll be buried to that song, I think. I also like Fleetwood Mac, ABBA and The Eagles.

Q: What is your favourite film?

A: 'A Hard Day's Night.' I could watch it over and over. It's brilliant

Q: What place in Edinburgh do you think every visitor to the city should see?

A: I'd ask them where they wanted to go. If they wanted to go to the Castle and do the usual stuff I'd take them there. Lots of the places that had meaning to me as I grew up are no longer there. One of the few places I played as a kid that are still around is Colinton Dell, which is like being in the middle of Sherwood Forest. Also, Princes Street on a sunny day is about as good as it gets. You'll never see a sight like it. I've travelled to lots of places but still think Edinburgh is the most beautiful

Q: What don't you like about Edinburgh?

A: Sometimes in the summer we get the haar coming in from the North Sea when the rest of Scotland is sunny.

Q: If you could have a top five of anything, what would it be?

A: I'd have my first four bowls in a game of bowls going well and the fifth one would be a bonus. Other folk might say their first 4 bowls and their wife
