ALISTAIR BELL

1957 - 2004

Born: 17 February 1957 in Glasgow

Q: When/why did you first start drinking in the Tynecastle Arms?

A: I first came in about 20 years ago, before Stevie and Senga worked here. I was just passing and popped in for a drink

Why do you keep going in?:

A: I'm friendly with the manager, and it's handy

Q: What is your favourite song/band?

A: My favourite band are Manband

Q: What place in Edinburgh do you think every visitor to the city should see?

A: They should just walk about and see for themselves. It's a great place for long walks. I used to enjoy walking from Gorgie, along Dalry, Haymarket, Princes Street, down Leith Walk to Easter Road and then back again. Wherever you walk in Edinburgh, there's always plenty to see

Q: What don't you like about Edinburgh?

A: You've got me stuck there

ALISTAIR'S 6 FAVOURITE LIVE BANDS

1. Dr Feelgood - Great live band. Saw them playing at Leith Town Hall and twice at Preservation Hall

2. Manband - seen them 12 times, the first time in Leith Town Hall in May 1975. Also they did a great gig in their home town of Swansea, which cost nothing. It was in the Castle Square and the Council paid for it. Also seen them at Feltham Town Hall, Feltham Assembly Rooms, in a club in York, at King Tuts in Glasgow and the Apollo Glasgow

3. The Sex Pistols - saw them on the SPOTS tour in 1977. They were playing under the name SPOTS (Sex Pistols on Tour Secretly) as at the time, their notoriety was such that no venue would book them. I saw them in Scarborough, where they were billed as 'Special Guest' and contrary to popular belief, they could actually play their instruments. I offered to buy Sid Vicious a pint and he said, he'd get me one. He went back over to his table and I thought he'd forgotten, but he came over with one for me later on. Sid, Johnny Rotten, Steve Cook and Paul Jones autographed a napkin for me which I've still got

4. The Who - I've seen them play 3 times. Parkhead in 1976 was the best. It was the first time I'd been there, being a Rangers supporter. They were a tremendous live band. It was an all-day, open air concert where they had a competition to win the organ from 'Tommy', which a local boy won, then Keith Moon set it on fire. Also playing were The Streetwalkers, with Roger Chapman, ex lead singer of The Family. They were garbage and got booed off. Roger Chapman said "the sun's been playing while my bands been playing, but now its going to piss down on you all." Then The Outlaws played. They had to throw bottles of Jack Daniels into the crowd to calm them down. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band were next, great in their home town. They had the crowd behind them. They were a great live band. Little Feat were 3rd top of the bill. They were good but they were an album rather than a singles band. The opening band were Widow Maker, who's lead singer was Steve Ellis who used to be in Love Affair

5. The Rolling Stones - saw them at Hampden in 1990. Oh aye that was good, although we needed a big screen to see them

6. Elvis Costello is excellent live. Saw him playing in the same club in Scarborough that I saw the Pistols in, the night after. He was the big new star at the time. I tried to get tickets for him when I got back to Edinburgh but they were sold out
