PADDY CONSIDINE

Have followed Paddy Considine's career closely since his mind-blowing debut in Shane Meadows wonderul,'A Room for Romeo Brass.' The following are a selection of what I consider to be his must-see films.

IN AMERICA (2003)

Latest film from director Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot) about an Irish family struggling to make it in the Big Apple. Going down a storm in the US and due for release here on 5 November

A ROOM FOR ROMEO BRASS (2000)

From the opening scene, this little gem of a film grips, touches and terrifies in equal measure

LAST RESORT (2001)

Rainy English seaside resorts have never looked so beautiful as in this understated and poignant tale of young Russian woman and her son seeking political asylum in the UK

24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE (2002)

Flawed but fun biopic of the slimily lovely Hacienda/Joy Division supremo, Tony Wilson

TODD SOLONDZ

Born in 1960, and a graduate of NYU's famed film school, from his first feature 'Fear, Anxiety and Depression,' his least successful so far, Todd Solondz has gone on to become one of the most out-there figures in American independent film-making today, as well as the undisputed king of suburban perversion.

HAPPINESS (1998)

Gloriously subversive, cringe-inducing, worryingly touching beast of a movie that will ensure you never look at a tuna sandwich the same way, or kiss your dog again

WELCOME TO THE DOLLSHOUSE (1995)

Jet black comedy about 11-year-old Dawn Wiener, a bullied and reviled New Jersey teenager with the nastiest little sister on earth, facing what looks like a life-long puberty

STORYTELLING (2002)

Race, sex, exploitation and celebrity jackbooted gloriously in two extremely discomforting novella sized stories set in terminally dysfunctional suburban New Jersey

LUKAS MOODYSSON

Fantastic Swedish director whose first 3 films have pushed him into the highest echelons of contemporary film-making

FUCKING AMAL (SHOW ME LOVE) (1998)

Gloriously spot-on film about a lonely schoolgirls secret crush on the 'popular' girl. Teenage angst has never been done so well.

TOGETHER (2001)

Hilarious comedy about a commune in 1970's Sweden. Lovely multi-dimensional characters to care about, laugh with and really get your teeth into. Plus lashings of ABBA.

LILYA 4-EVER (2003)

Lyrical, dark and harrowing study of teenage life in the former Soviet Union. Again, Moodysson shows the world, this time hellishly bleak, from the point of view of his young protagonists, drawing out incredibly strong performances from his young cast.

HARMONY KORINE

Unpredictable, skewed, wasted, wildly imaginative director born in California in 1974. Wrote the script for Larry Clark's 'Kids' when he was only 19.

GUMMO (1997)

Mad, colourful, impressionistic teen tragedy and poetic narrative about derailed cat-killer and local geekboy, Gummo and the sad, scary redneck kids he hangs about with

JULIEN DONKEY-BOY (1999)

Gripping, moving, visually stunning journey into the heart of a schizophrenic (Ewen Bremner.) Werner Herzog plays the fucked up ex-army father with unnerving ease. One of the most unusual and convincing portraits of mental illness I've ever seen

KIDS (1995)

Director Larry Clark's developing friendship with a gang of skateboarding youngsters led him to ask the then 19 year old Korine to write the screenplay for this sweatily intimate portrait of a young girl's life on the day she discovers she is HIV positive

KATRIN CARLIDGE

1961-2002

Katrin Carlidge was one of the best young actresses to emerge from Britain in the past 20 years. She died tragically in September 2002 from complications due to pneumonia and septicaemia. The following are links to a few of my favourite of Katrin's films

BREAKING THE WAVES (1996)

Lars Von Trier's harrowing, relentless masterpiece. Like most of Trier's films, people tend to either love or hate this film. Personally, I think it's one of the finest movie's ever made. Have two boxes of hankies and a few Valium at the ready though

NAKED (1993)

Arguably Mike Leigh's finest film. Brutal, touching, hopeless, inspiring dissection of 80's London through the eyes of existential drifter, Johnny (David Thewlis.) more

NO MAN'S LAND (2001)

Danis Tanovic's award-winning portrait of Ciki and Nino, two Bosnian and Serb soldiers, stranded in a trench between enemy lines during the war in 1983. Powerful, humane and tragic.

CAREER GIRLS (1997)

Mike Leigh's touching look into the passage of time in the friendship between two women who think they have dealt with the past, but have really only swept it under the carpet.
