HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR:
Getting the club nights at Abart in Zurich confused and wandering into the
S&M-fest that is 'Industrial' Night. Actually ended up being a very pleasant
evening (there was a pool table), apart from the one guy in full German
military regalia who kept staring at me. His name wasn't Harry sadly.
I hardly ever listened to John Peel's Radio Show. Therefore I have no fond
memories or witty anecdotes. Apparently, i'm just about the only one.

5 THINGS I NEVER GOT ROUND TO ASKING JOHN PEEL
1. "John, I attribute my longstanding discomfort around women to being
brought up, for the most part, by a television set. During the sixties/
early seventies, did you, with any sense of regularity, refer to yourself as
either a) a 'leg man' or b) a 'tit man'?"
2. "I get the feeling that you disliked David Bowie, or perhaps, more
reasonably, resented him; more than anything, I get the distinct impression
that this was ABSOLUTELY PERSONAL. Explain yourself. There's more to it
than him owing you £50."
3. "I often wonder, what do you think when you hear Gilles Peterson play
some fantastic weird jazz freakout, knowing that when it was originally
released you were giving 47 sessions to Bridget St John?"
4. "John, are blokes always this confrontational when they meet you?"
5. "Do you think maybe it's a way of showing I/they/we care?"

SONGS OF THE YEAR
One of the very best years for music - interesting neo-folk, the ill-named but super 'indietronica', broody and enraptured singer-songwriters, glitchy dub-pop, US indie bands without sock-puppet singers, Canada, Canada and more Canada, the icecapades sampling of The Go! Team and the wonderful new nine-piece wonder Ella Guru from Liverpool. Here are my highlights, in sort of order (*means from one of my favourite albums of the year):
Joanna Newsom Peach, Plum, Pear (*The Milk Eyed Mender)
Ella Guru Blues Is the Root (*The First Album)
Wolf Parade Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts
The Go! Team Bottle Rocket (*Thunder Lightning Strike)
Johnny Boy You Are the Generation Who Bought More Shoes...
The Killers Mr Brightside (*Hot Fuss)
Rachel Goswell Plucked (*Waves Are Universal)
Lucky Jim Lesbia (*Our Troubles End Tonight)
The Arcade Fire Une Annιe Sans Lumiere (*Funeral)
Khonnor The Stoned Night
Marquis de Suave Postcards (*LP still unreleased)
Laura Veirs Riptide (*Carbon Glacier)
Iron & Wine Each Coming Night (*The Creek Drank the Cradle)
A Girl Called Eddy People Used To Dream About the Future (*self-titled)
Ed Harcourt Born in the 70s
Junior Boys Teach Me How To Fight
Rufus Wainwright I Don't Know What It Is
Maritime King of Doves
Mϊm The Island of the Children's Children
The Blue Nile Everybody Else
Thirteen Senses Into the Fire
Stina Nordenstam I'm Staring Out at the World
The Futureheads Hounds of Love
Tortuous Tracks - Efterklang
Dogs Die in Hot Cars Apples and Oranges
Lali Puna Faking the Books
This was also the year I discovered (generally belatedly) Parker & Lily, The Innocence Mission, Fennesz, The Shins, The Aislers Set, The Album Leaf, Tristeza, Bridget St John (sorry Gordon), Neutral Milk Hotel, Ulrich Schnauss, Life Without Buildings, Jon Brion, Lone Pigeon, State River Widening, The New Pornographers, Robert Deeble and Tilly and the Wall.
MY PEEL SOUNDBITES
1 (distracted at end of record) 'And the Kop sang like Gods they did I heard it on the radio'
2 (first play of Blue Monday) 'Sounds like Pink Floyd gone disco'
3 'I think 1983 is going to be the year when jangly guitar music makes a comeback'
4 'I could listen to Cathal Coughlan singing the telephone directory'
BOOKS
1 Roddy Lumsden - Vitamin Q
2 Roddy Lumsden Mischief Night: New & Selected Poems
Lest this seem arrogant, the 4 books I got for Xmas should sum up the geekiness of my real reading: Dust by Joseph Amato (yes, it's about dust); Animal Tracks and Signs (great close-up dropping photos); Stuffed Animals and Pickled Heads (a history of natural history museums); American Road Atlas (even though I can't drive).
BEST JIGSAWS DONE THIS YEAR
1 Vintage Cadbury's adverts (this was the one Nina and I were so engrossed in, we missed the bells at Hogmanay; we also had baked fruit in the oven)

2 Mull Historical Society LP (too much too soon)
3 Bark Psychosis LP (good, but not Hex)
