Mark Reed
This was the year I got old. I only bought two copies of NME (the relaunch one and the Christmas one). I'd not heard of many of the bands in either, and had a strong feeling I wouldn't like their music if I heard it. I took more and more refuge in playing PiL and NWA. It's 2004 - I want my Sci-Fi music! I was also tired a lot, and my ambition in life became to spend all my time watching live golf on TV. Preferably on a huge plasma TV screen whilst sat in a very comfy chair. It's not much to ask, is it?

DVDs OF THE YEAR
24 Hour Party People

Lord of the Rings 2 Extended Edition (the Gollum / MTV awards Easter Egg is genius)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Spirited Away
Castle In The Sky
TV
The Second Coming
Happiness
The Solheim Cup
The Open this year was crap, and Ben Curtis is a snotty oik who needs a slap. Thankfully his performances since the Open have made Paul Lawrie look like a consistent title winner. The Mark Roe and Jesper Parnevik disqualifications were a tragedy, particularly in light of Roe's score in that round.
Lisa in Big Brother. Scary.
Trisha and Trisha Extra. Especially the blood test / lie detector results specials. Look, I was off for months. You can't avoid daytime TV.
Teen Big Brother
GADGETS OF THE YEAR
iPod (the 2nd gen one, when they were still cool)
Sky +
COMPUTER GAME OF THE YEAR
Tiger Woods 2004 (the best golf game ever. Computerised Prozac. Wish you could play the Ryder Cup in it though.)
Call of Duty
Zookeeper
Samorost
Warcraft 3 - the Frozen Throne - secret bonus levels
BOOKS
'Into The Bear Pit' - Mark James
'Four Iron in the Soul' - Lawrence Donovan
'Telling Lies About Hitler' - Richard J Evans
GIGS OF THE YEAR
The first five minutes of the Flaming Lips @ the Usher Hall. The rest was patronising tosh.
Super Furry Animals @ Queens Hall
Durutti Column @ Queens Hall
Any of the myriad Outhud gigs (prob. the Bobby Conn one)
Manitoba @ the Venue. Unexpected (in every way) and blissful. Felt like being 16 again.
Squarepusher @ the Liquid Rooms
Honorable mention to John Cale @ the Liquid Rooms for being much better than I expected him to be.
WORST GIG OF THE YEAR
Roots Manuva @ the Venue. The music was great, but the crowd should have been shot. Scum. Almost entirely pissed up students trying to show each other how cool they were, who had no idea of gig etiquette and totally spoiled the gig. The nearest I've come to starting a fight. Seriously. Don't they teach students gig etiquette in their first year anymore?
Lemon Jelly were disappointing too.
FAVOURITE ALBUM OF THE YEAR THAT WASN'T RELEASED IN 2003
'London 1986' - Talk Talk
SHOCKS OF THE YEAR
Finding out that Kate Sanderson is only a couple of years younger than me
Legge getting a mobile
ARGUMENT I'VE HAD WITH MOST PEOPLE IN 2003 BUT STILL BELIEVE I'M RIGHT AND THEY'RE WRONG
Caddies ARE Sportsmen (as opposed to mere bag carriers, who aren't)
I'VE BEEN HAPPIEST WHEN I'VE BEEN IN THE FOLLOWING PLACES
Arran
St. Andrews
On the beach in Fife with Rhian, Anita and Pickle
AMBITIONS FOR 2004
To move house without killing anyone, especially myself.
All the people who are currently 39 to enter their new demographic without too much angst.
Europe to stuff the hell out of the US in the Ryder Cup. And Justin Leonard to do a Fat Laura Davies and not get a single point.
No more close friends to get badly ill. And the one who is to get well soon and enjoy spending her money.
For things to sort themselves out.
CJ Jeruzal
