The fight scenes are excellent, but I widnae bother if ye dinnae like kung fu films tae begin wi'.

WORST BOOK OF THE YEAR
'Timeline' - Michael Crichton - wherein our Mickey demonstrates such faith in his writing skills that whenever he describes something, he feels the need to include a f*cking sketch of it too! And the story was crap too. Pish.

Club of the Year
Big Beat
Hon. mentions to the Warp night at Camber, Posh in Leith, and what I can remember of the Northern Soul night at the Leith Social Club.
Paul Hutton
Due to the birth of my son, Patrick, I haven't been out much in the last year. So here's the choices in the areas I was able to pay any attention to...
ALBUMS
1. Johnny Cash - American III: Solitary Man
If anyone doesn't like this they simply haven't got a soul.
2. Eels - Daisies of the Galaxy
Amazing the difference cheering up can make.
3. PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories from the Sea
Amazing the difference cheering up and a couple of pretzels can make.
4. Teenage Fanclub - Howdy
Not, by any stretch, a Grand Prix. Still lovely though, and there weren't many better tracks than Accidental Life in the last year.
5. Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out
BUBBLING UNDER
Wu Tang Clan - The W
Normally that gangster shit combined with cod-Eastern mythology would drive me witless. Not this time.
Broadcast - The Noise made By People
Black Box Recorder - The Facts of Life
By rights I should have hated both of these...
MOST LISTENED TO ALBUM
Nebraska, Bruce Springsteen
TV
The Sopranos
Not as good as the first series, and still miles better than everything else. A series that totally inverts your ideas of good and evil, and contained, in Steve van Zandt's "cheese fuck", the finest insult seen on television in years.
Big Brother
So the last week was crap, it was won by an arse and by the middle of the next series nobody will be watching (unless folk are shagging). If you didn't see the vanquishing of Thatcherism when Nick was ejected, you
didn't have anything to talk about for a month.
England - Romania
Sorry...
Cold Feet
I'm clearly getting older. Seriously, I must be. Adventurous TV it ain't, but in a futile attempt to defend this choice I'm going to say that it's well-written, and that John Thompson and Faye Ripley are a great comic partnership.
Hearts and Bones
BBC's "Cold Feet without the jokes" is an even harder choice to defend. Still the break up of the central relationship was like watching a slow-motion car crash.
Consistently enjoyed: Frasier, that series about Environmental health officers in Sheffield, SMTV Live.
Regret: BBC's treatment of Seinfeld. If you're going to stick it on in the middle of the night and cancel every time the sodding darts is on, why did you buy it?
MOVIES
Being John Malkovich
Never mind what Legge says
Magnolia
Sprawling, with an obvious debt to Short Cuts. Superb cast, and considering just about nothing happens...
American Beauty
In hindsight, not as good as you'd been led to believe, and not as good as it thought it was. In particular, the last reel faltered. I guess it all depends if you like Kevin Spacey's smirk.
The Insider
Al Pacino plays Al Pacino in an Al Pacino movie. If you like Al Pacino
Toy Story 2
Some day, all cartoons will look like this.
Biggest irritant - Toss up between Bringing Out the Dead and The End of the Affair. Normally Julianne Moore movies work for me, but Stephen Rea's "Mr. Cholmondley Warner does cuckold" acting just pissed me off. And as for that Scorsese-Cage piece of crap.
BOOK
King of the World - David Remnick
EVENTS
I'd be pissing about, lying, pretending and generally pulling everyone's leg if I was to pretend that the most significant happening in my life in the last year (by some distance) wasn't the birth of Patrick. Call me a soppy old get if you want, but everything else pales in comparison.

BEST FOOTBALLING MOMENT
Phil Neville v. Romania (Euro2000)
While Airdrie winning the Challenge Cup would normally win (particularly in view of all we've been through), the best footballing moment of the year was in Rotterdam while watching Portugal trounce Germany 3-0 in Euro2000 - at the same time fearing our 1/4 final tickets would see us watching England against Italy. Listening to 5Live on the radio, hearing Alan Green describe England's demise as the penalty went in and the celebrations afterwards with the 3 of us, kilted and very drunk, dancing and singing 'Romanee, Romanee' to a Portuguese film crew - unforgettable!
All of the football and carnival of 10 days at Euro2000 was great.
