Serves: Two good portions or enough to do one person for two days
1 lb Stewing Steak
1 Lamb Kidney
1 Large Carrot
1 large Onion
No more than an oxo cube sized piece of gravy salt - available from Robertsons Butchers (see below)

One of the few places in Edinburgh you can still find Compton's Gravy Salt in abundance. Bearing in mind that they only charge 50 pence for a block that will make at least 12 pots of stew/mince/casserole, I'd say it's well worth the bus fare or braving the dreaded Greenways. Robertson's also do some great deals in budget meat packages from Single Breakfast (including bacon, link sausage, lorne sausage, black pudding and eggs) up to extremely good value £10 packs)
4. Put lid on and let it dae away for a couple of hours
5. When meat is tender, crumble in the gravy salt
6. Mix in and keep stirring until it’s thick enough. The way you like it
7. If it’s not thick enough, put in a teaspoon of cornflour. I dinnae myself
8. Stick a fork in the meat. If it breaks up, it’s ready
These ingredients make enough to do 2 days, and should cost less than £2. I suggest serving it with new potatoes, or mashed. Whatever you fancy. Maybe with some peas or sprouts, as there’s carrot already in it. As far as I know, Robertsons Butchers in Gorgie is the only place you can get gravy salt. My mother used to use it years ago and I’ve been trying to find some for ages
